KUCHING (April 18): Community leaders must play a more proactive role in addressing rising social challenges, particularly mental health issues, by connecting those in need with available support services, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She said many societal issues, including depression and family-related problems, often go unnoticed until individuals reach a point where they can no longer cope.

“Sometimes we feel we have no problems until we are faced with challenges and realise we need someone to talk to openly.

“From there, we begin to understand the issues and work towards solutions,” she said when officiating the Sahabat Pusat Sokongan Sosial Setempat (PSSS) and Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (YKN) Programme: Caring Leaders and Strategic Partners here.

Nancy stressed that leaders, including those from the community, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and political groups, must be equipped with the knowledge to guide individuals facing difficulties.

“If we want to help others, we must first understand the proper procedures — how to approach issues, how to resolve them, and where to seek help,” she said.

She noted that the PSSS initiative plays a crucial role in addressing social issues such as mental health concerns, domestic problems, abuse, bullying and sexual harassment.

The programme, she said, strengthens community-based support systems through professional counselling services and social interventions, with community leaders acting as key connectors to vulnerable groups.

Nancy also highlighted the importance of collaboration between government agencies, NGOs and strategic partners in addressing social issues effectively.

“Without cooperation, it would be difficult to resolve the challenges faced by the people. This partnership must continue so that we can provide better support to those in need,” she said.

She added that YKN initiatives, including counselling services, food assistance, educational support and welfare programmes, are part of ongoing efforts to improve community wellbeing.

Nancy also encouraged more organisations to collaborate with YKN to expand outreach, particularly in education, welfare and healthcare.

She noted that contributions to YKN are eligible for tax exemption under Subsection 44(6) of the Income Tax Act 1967, offering added value for donors in supporting corporate social responsibility efforts.

Earlier, Nancy who is also Santubong MP was informed that about 200 community leaders from her parliamentary constituency attended the programme, which also featured expert sessions on mental health and online crime awareness.

She expressed appreciation to all strategic partners and agencies involved for their continued support in implementing community-focused programmes.
